Jenkins interviewed Secretary Castro in his marketing campaign headquarters in San Antonio only a week earlier than Castro’s self-imposed fundraising deadline. Secretary Castro has put out a fundraising name, and if unable to make his aim, he’ll drop out of the race. Jenkins and Castro talk about this determination, and Castro’s hopes of pushing the needle on vital points corresponding to immigration, housing, police brutality, and homelessness.

Moreover, Castro talks in-depth about his relationship along with his twin brother, Congressman Joaquin Castro, because it has been each aggressive and nourishing, in addition to the influence his household has had on his work. Under are a number of excerpts from the episode, out there now on PodcastOne and Apple Podcasts.

Secretary Julian Castro Not Shying Away from Troublesome Subjects

Castro: “I made a decision early in this campaign that I was going to tell the truth about a lot of issues, even if people don’t necessarily like to hear what we need to hear… You have to ask, ‘Why me?’ And if you’re going to run, ‘Why is it worth running?’ And that’s why I’ve been so forthright and so bold and fearless on these issues… like police brutality and immigration, that often times even Democrats are running away from. But at the same time, we see the videos of what’s happening in America, and of what’s happening at the border, and we need to speak up. And I’ve tried to do that – not in a throwing bombs way – but in a constructive way. Putting out plans on how we would deal with this if I’m president.”

Relationship with Senator Elizabeth Warren

Jenkins: “I feel like there’s a collegiality that you guys [Sec. Castro and Sen. Warren] are really aligned policy wise. Is that real? Am I just making that up? What’s that term Gen Z uses? ‘Shipping?’ We’re ‘shipping’ Warren and Castro.”

Castro: “Senator Warren is probably the person I’ve spoken to the most in terms of other candidates. We’ve sat down a couple of times, and when we see each other at the debates and other events. I think the world of her. And I think she’s fantastic.”

Secretary Julian Castro’s Marketing campaign

Castro: “We’re at this crucial moment in the campaign where we have to raise $800,000 at the end of the month, October 31st, basically to be viable in this campaign… I’m not taking any PAC money. I have one of the highest percentages of low dollar donations – no federal lobbyist money – but that means I’m counting on the people of the country. I’ve been really proud that we’ve had a lot of grassroots support, and I hope we can get that in the next few days.”
