Amazon opens its first cashierless grocery store

Today Amazon is opening its very first supermarket to pilot the use of the retailer’s cashierless “Simply Walk Out” technology that has previously powered 25 Amazon Go convenience stores in a handful of major U.S. cities. Based in Amazon’s home town of Seattle, the new Amazon Go Supermarket allows customers to look for everyday grocery products like fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, pastry shop items, family fundamentals, dairy, easy-to-make dinner options, beer, red wine and spirits, and more.

The store is 7,700 square feet in the front of your house and 10,400 square feet in general, making it the largest usage of Amazon’s Just Leave innovation to date.

Similar To Amazon Go corner store, shoppers first utilize the Amazon Go app to scan in as they enter the store, then shop as typical. Video cameras and sensing units track the items eliminated from the shelves which are then contributed to the shopper’s virtual cart. When the consumer exits the shop, their cart is taken a look at instantly using their payment card on file.

Completion outcome is a supermarket with no lines or waiting. On the other hand, store staff are maximized to look after other aspects of the business like restocking racks and customer care.

This model has been working for Amazon’s convenience stores where customers can be found in to get items quickly. But grocery shopping provides a new challenge for Amazon’s cashierless innovation. In traditional supermarket, this wouldn’t be an issue– if another consumer later got the misplaced item, it might still be called effectively. Amazon’s innovation might have a hard time to determine what that item was, however.

The Seattle shop lies at AVA Capital Hill (610 E. Pike Street). Its hours of operation are 7 AM– 11 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 7 AM– midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to the typical grocery items, the shop promises to offer a mix of natural brand names and special finds. Regional vendors in the debut assortment include La Parisienne, Donut Factory, Tony’s Coffee, Seattle Bagel Bakeshop, Lopez Island Creamery, Ellenos Yogurt, Uli’s Famous Sausage, Beecher’s, Eat Local, Sri Bella, Carso’s Pasta Company, and Theo Chocolate.

Reports that Amazon was looking to launch its own grocery store company, different from Whole Foods, started to circulate in 2015. However it was unconfirmed at the time whether Amazon’s grocery strategies consisted of using its cashierless, A.I.-driven innovation, or if the new shops would be more conventional supermarket developed also to serve as centers for Amazon’s grocery-delivery organisation.

It seems Amazon has an interest in checking out how well its cashierless technology can scale, but it’s not yet clear the number of cashierless shops it wishes to open in the months and years ahead.
