Brexit: EU to ask UK to return Elgin marbles to Greece in trade talks

  • The EU and Britain are beginning talks on a post-Brexit free trade deal next month.
  • There are lots of contentious problems– and one European minister has predicted that the two sides will “rip each other apart” prior to reaching an offer.
  • The EU will ask Boris Johnson to provide ancient marbles back to Greece as part of the deal, according to The Times of London.

The European Union will demand that Britain provides a collection of ancient marble sculptures back to Greece as part of a post-Brexit trade offer.

The marbles– considered amongst the terrific works of ancient civilisation– are displayed at the British Museum in London, in a wing custom-built to accommodate them.

Brussels included this provision at Greece’s demand.

An ambassador involved in trade talks with Boris Johnson’s UK government told the paper: “It is a step of how Brexit has altered the video game that the Greeks feel able to utilize the trade speak to pursue the Elgin Marbles.”

A Downing Street source told The Sun paper that the marbles were “going no place.”

” This shows an unpleasant lack of seriousness about the negotiations on the EU side,” they included.

British and EU negotiators will begin talks on a possible free trade offer next month. Both sides intend to reach some sort of arrangement by the end of the year, when the 11- month Brexit transition period comes to an end.

David Frost, the UK chief Brexit mediator, in a speech on Monday cautioned the EU that the UK would not sign up to EU guidelines as part of a free trade deal– and would rather walk away without one.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, France’s foreign minister, on Sunday predicted that UK and EU mediators would “rip each other apart” once talks begin in March.

Several senior EU figures consisting of Phil Hogan, the bloc’s head of trade, have revealed doubts that a deal can be struck so short a timetable.
