Hong Kong cautions of ‘tsunami-like’ shocks

” The real effect of this [coronavirus] epidemic on Hong Kong’s economy is quite big, and may be higher than the impact of SARS on the economy in 2003,” Financial Secretary Paul Chan wrote in a post

” In addition to the epidemic, the regional situation has not completely escaped the haze of last year’s social events. It is essential to preserve a cautious mindset towards the short-term economic outlook.”

” Such “tsunami-like” shocks may trigger the unemployment rate to deteriorate rapidly. Indeed, the predicted fiscal deficit for the new (2020/21), in regards to amount, may be the highest ever.”

” The impacted areas are no longer restricted to retail, catering or tourism-related markets … I hope we can endure this financial winter season that might not be a half-moment.”
