Tesla has ‘6 years lead over Toyota and VW’ in electronics, says brand-new Model 3 teardown

A new Tesla Design 3 teardown purchased by the Nikkei Company Publications pertained to the conclusion that Tesla is “6 years ahead of Toyota and VW” when it comes to electronics.

Tesla has impressed many engineers who dared to take apart a Design 3.

After its own Tesla Model 3 teardown, Munro and Associates considered the car’s electronic devices as a work of art and a German engineering company was likewise quite satisfied after reverse-engineering the Design 3

Now Nikkei Company Publications, a Japanese media outlet, performed its own Model 3 teardown and it was also impressed by Tesla’s electronic devices.

They composed in a report:

” What sticks out most is Tesla’s incorporated main control system, or “full self-driving computer.” Likewise known as Hardware 3, this little piece of tech is the business’s greatest weapon in the blossoming EV market. It might end the automobile market supply chain as we know it.”

Engineers from Japanese automakers were apparently also associated with the teardown:

One shocked engineer from a major Japanese automaker examined the computer system and declared, “We can not do it.”

The Complete Self-Driving computer they are speaking about was released in April of 2019 and for that reason, the other teardowns didn’t include the brand-new devices.

When launching the new system that powers its Auto-pilot and other advanced features in its vehicles, Tesla declared that it was ” objectively the best chip in the world”

They declared it can perform 144 trillion operations per second, handle 2,300 frames per second, and do it all while taking in less power.

Nikkei shared a photo of the system:

They approximate that such computers will not make their method rivals up until 2025:

” This kind of electronic platform, with an effective computer at its core, holds the key to handling heavy information loads in tomorrow’s smarter, more autonomous cars and trucks. Industry insiders anticipate such innovation to take hold around 2025 at the earliest.”

You would think that if other automakers wished to buy developing their own advanced computing platform, they might do it with their large resources.

However, Nikkei provided an unusual reason this will not happen:

” The genuine factor for holding off?

They believe that other automakers “feel obliged to continue using complex webs of dozens of ECUs” while Tesla is able to take a more “fresh start” and vertical method to electronic devices.

Electrek’s Take

Truly, that’s going to be their excuse for lagging Tesla’s innovation? They don’t wish to adversely impact their providers?

Look, no one wants anybody to lose their tasks, but they will lose them anyway if everyone stops purchasing their vehicles due to the fact that Tesla is simply keeping up all of it.

The real reason is that traditional automakers have all moved to a supply chain-heavy model where they don’t have know-how in electronics and rather focus on other automobile elements, like engines, chassis, suspensions, and so on

It also results in very long product cycles so developments take place on long timeframes.

Tesla took a various technique by vertically integrating a much higher portion of parts, specifically those it considers important, like the onboard computer system and electronic devices, and adopting an innovation cycle far more similar to the tech industry.
