WASHINGTON– The Justice Department on Wednesday charged a Defense Department linguist with sharing categorized details with a private connected to the Hezbollah terrorist group, including the genuine names of individuals who were spying for the U.S.
In what would be a significant security breach, authorities stated the linguist, Mariam Taha Thompson, 61, who works under agreement for the Defense Department, sent the extremely categorized data while serving at an Unique Operations Task Force website in Erbil, Iraq.
She was jailed on Feb. 27 and is due to make an initial court look later Wednesday. She faces espionage charges. Ms. Thompson could not be reached for comment through the Pentagon and court documents didn’t identify an attorney for her.
” While in a war zone, the accused supposedly offered sensitive national defense info, including the names of people assisting the United States, to a Lebanese nationwide located overseas,” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers stated in a declaration.
In an affidavit submitted in the case, an FBI special representative said that starting around Dec. 30, 2019– the very same day protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy in Iraq to oppose U.S. airstrikes– computer audit logs showed that Ms. Thompson accessed 57 submits worrying 8 U.S. human intelligence sources.
” These files contained classified national defense details including true names, individual identification data, background details, and photos of the human sources, as well as operations cables detailing info the human sources offered to the United States federal government,” the affidavit said.
