Coronavirus Vaccine? Two Pharmaceutical Giants Collaborating To Develop One

Two of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers are signing up with forces to establish a new vaccine to avoid COVID-19

Usually, the pharmaceutical leviathans GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi are competitors, however in a conference call with reporters, GSK CEO Emma Walmsley stated the coronavirus pandemic represented “an unmatched international health threat,” and, for that reason, needed new methods of operating.

In the collaboration, GSK will be providing the adjuvant and Sanofi will supply the specific protein part of the coronavirus that will produce the suitable antibody action.

GSK is hoping the partnership will minimize the development time of a vaccine significantly. Under regular scenarios, it can take a years to bring a new vaccine to market.

” But we’re preparing to start trials in the next few months,” Walmsley said. “And if we’re successful, based on regulatory considerations, we aim to complete the development needed to make the vaccine available in the second half of 2021.”

Johnson & Johnson likewise supplied an upgrade on that business’s vaccine strategies in a conference call with investors. Chief Scientific Officer Paul Stoffels said the company had determined one lead and two alternate vaccine candidates that it planned to prepare to make.

” Our goal is to be able to produce 1 billion doses of the vaccine worldwide,” Stoffels stated. He added that he intended to have outcomes of safety data on the very first vaccine prospect by the end of the year.
