Coronavirus Update: Flouting County Lockdown, Tesla Brings Workers Back to Fremont Factory

FREMONT (KPIX)– One significant Bay Location business is doing it’s best to get its employees back on the job. The only issue? The call to go back to work is against present county health orders.

In an e-mail sent out Thursday night, Elon Musk called 30 percent of the Tesla Fremont factory workforce back to the plant to begin making vehicles, stating Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order allowed it.

The problem? The governor stated that local orders, such as those in Bay Location counties pressing the lockdown alleviating to May 31, can supersede the state order.

” Based upon conditions on the ground … I want to thank the local health directors in the Bay Area for doing what they think is best for their neighborhoods,” Newsom stated in a press conference Friday.

That was supported by the Alameda County public health department which released this declaration, stating the electric cars and truck maker runs out compliance.

” Tesla has actually been notified that they do not fulfill those requirements and must not resume. We welcome Tesla’s proactive deal with a reopening strategy so that as soon as they fit the criteria to resume they can do so in a manner that safeguards their employees and the community at large,” Neetu Balram said in a statement.

The Tesla plant had to be closed down at the start of the Bay Area’s stay-at-home order. Musk deemed it an “vital service,” while health authorities did not.

Silicon Valley observers aren’t stunned Musk’s business attempted to evade the guidelines.

” He’s a person who shows off (sic) authority. He’s done that his entire profession. He’s done it with his own board. This is Mr. Musk playing according to type,” stated Russell Hancock, president and CEO of Joint Endeavor Silicon Valley.
