Ralphs provides new ‘thank you’ perk after union protest

After Ralphs employees objected the grocery chain’s phasing-out of “appreciation pay” for working through the coronavirus outbreak, parent company Kroger said Friday it would award a new one-time benefit to all per hour grocery, supply-chain, manufacturing, drug store and call center workers.

Quickly after the demonstration, Kroger, which owns Ralphs and numerous other grocery chains, revealed the brand-new “thank you” bonus offer of $400 for full-time staff members and $200 for part-time staff members.

” The new Thank You Pay bookends a Gratitude Pay initially provided to frontline associates for their efforts at the start of the pandemic in March. It also follows several Hero Rewards that were paid in April through mid-May, with associates receiving their last payment by May 23,” Ralphs representative John Votava said in a statement.

John Grant, president of UFCW Local 770, which represents more than 20,000 grocery employees in Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, said that the benefit wasn’t enough, and that the business’s modification in course was an attempt to “exit the space more gracefully.”

” A one-time benefit does not reflect the important and unsafe work grocery clerks are taken part in. They’re disappointing up ‘one-time,’ they’re appearing day after day,” he stated.

About 25 people collected for the Friday protest, including Grant, he stated. He stated it was a part of more comprehensive protests by the union in California in addition to other Western states consisting of Oregon and Colorado.

There were little demonstrations outside Ralphs and Kroger-owned Food 4 Less shops in Canoga Park, Ventura and West Hollywood, Grant stated.

Kroger did not respond to questions about its decisions connected to reward pay.
