The San Gabriel Valley has lots of excellent dining establishments, and throughout the pandemic, they’ve dealt with the very same issues as other restaurants and businesses.

Fiona Ng, the head producer at KPCC’s AirTalk, lives in the SGV and interacted with LAist Food Editor Elina Shatkin to produce a brief series about how these dining establishments are doing. In her reporting, Fiona talked with the owner of a hot pot dining establishment who was literally giving away pots with every order, a boba shop trying a grand resuming, and more.

L.A., California, The World: There are now 43,052 coronavirus cases and 2,049 deaths in L.A. County, and a minimum of 89,865 cases and 3,649 deaths in California. The 2020 Census: Malibu and Bel Air are revealing unusually low census response rates, and no one is quite sure why– however there are some theories. The due date for the Census Bureau to kip down information will likely be delayed, which might have considerable implications for redistricting in California

Reopening L.A.: Guidelines for reopening churches will be coming soon. L.A. city authorities released a program to open up community streets for Angelenos to remain active while keeping a safe distance from other people.

L.A.’s Unhoused: A court order to “ humanely relocate” people experiencing homelessness far from freeways was improved to state that homeless people who live within 500 feet of a freeway bridge or ramp should be transferred by Sept. 1.

Parenting: In today’s discussion about parenting in the time of quarantine, we speak about screen time. Before the pandemic, the problem of how much time we let our children spend on devices was already causing moms and dads angst. Now that education and interacting socially is occurring via screens, this problem is even more of a minefield.

Immigration: Advocacy groups have submitted a civil liberties problem with the Department of Homeland Security, declaring immigrant detainees have gone through chemical direct exposure at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. Numerous detainees have said the disinfectants utilized at the facility have triggered eye irritation and some individuals to cough up blood.
