A UCSF physician, coming home after several weeks in New York City helping coronavirus patients, shared his stunning experience of taking a trip on a packed flight back to SFO.

Tweets from cardiologist Ethan Weiss went viral Saturday after the physician published a picture of a full United flight.

” I think @united is unwinding their social distancing policy nowadays?” he wrote. “Every seat full on this 737.”

On April 22, United revealed it was “limiting seat selections in all cabins, so consumers won’t have the ability to choose seats beside each other or middle seats where offered.” the airline later on clarified this does not suggest all passengers will have an empty seat beside them; due to load factors or guest requests, it’s possible the flight could be full– as it appeared to be on Weiss’ Newark-to-SFO journey.

” Though we can not ensure that all customers will be seated next to an unoccupied seat, based on traditionally low travel need and the implementation of our various social distancing measures that is the most likely result,” United says on its site

ALSO: Why are some airplanes crowded even with air travel down?

But due to the fact that of a bevy of flight cancelations, lots of once-common routes are down to one or two journeys per day, leading some flights to fill up.

Weiss and 2 lots other healthcare employees were being flown totally free by United, however Weiss revealed confusion regarding why the other travelers were flying at all.

” We are about to land & I simply desired to state a couple of things. 3) I am with a group of 25 nurses and medical professionals who have actually been working in New York City health centers for the past 2-4 weeks.

” This is the last time I’ll be flying once again for a long time,” he added.

In a statement to ABC7, United did not straight address the reasons for the absence of physical distancing, but stated: “We have actually revamped our cleansing and safety treatments and carried out a new boarding and deplaning procedure to promote social distancing … and all passengers and workers were asked to wear face coverings, consistent with our brand-new policy.”
