Tyson’s Largest Pork Plant Reopens As Tests Show Rise In Coronavirus Cases

The reopening of Tyson Foods’ biggest U.S. pork plant came the very same day that health authorities in Black Hawk County, where the plant is situated, revealed that 1,031 of the plant’s approximated 2,800 workers have checked favorable for the infection.
Thompson says that when he toured the plant then, he “completely anticipated” to see barriers, masks and other individual protective equipment in location.
” What I saw when we went into that plant was an outright free-for-all,” he says.
Thompson’s primary focus is on the safety and security of the approximately 131,000 residents of Black Hawk County– and he says he feels particularly accountable for the Tyson workers.
” We like our bacon, but we do not want to think of how it’s actually done. When you got a carcass hanging there, bleeding on the floor, you don’t wish to think of that … a by-product of that is the people that in fact do that work,” he says.
” Sadly, these are usually marginalized residents because they are refugees, since they do not speak English, since they do a job that very few individuals want to do,” he continues. “So there’s something inherent there that was not right that I hope that they have actually remedied. And I’ll hold my breath and hope that is true. If it’s not, we’ll support, regroup and go at this once again.”
