Apple Inc. built its device empire by outsourcing production to a large ecosystem of chip makers and other element experts. Under Chief Executive Tim Cook, it is taking a great deal of that service back.
The business, which launched its first iPhone processor in 2010, said Monday it prepares to ship Macs later on this year with customized chips, a move that ends a 15- year technology partnership with Intel Corp. Apple said the custom-designed chips are more effective and deal higher-performance graphics.
