” Bigotry – the ideology utilized to validate slavery – is a legacy that still shapes the life possibilities for people of African and Caribbean heritage in the UK,” said Dr Katie Donington, a senior speaker in history at the London South Bank University.
Nick Mackenzie, Greene King’s primary executive officer, said: “It is untenable that one of our founders benefited from slavery and argued against its abolition in the 1800 s.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays and HSBC were among a number of banks found by the Telegraph to be linked to the slave trade.
Royal Bank of Scotland: In a 2009 report, the bank admitted that people who were partners or directors of RBSG (Royal Bank of Scotland Group) predecessors “might have owned servants themselves or been otherwise straight linked to servant enterprises in the British West Indies”.
Founded in Edinburgh in 1727, it also discovered evidence that suggested other partners of its predecessors may have been part-owners of “ships associated with slave trading voyages during the 18 th and early 19 th Centuries”.

” As an organisation with a history stretching back more than 300 years, these crucial and painful concerns have a place in our history.
The bank, presently majority-owned by the UK federal government, included that it had “looked into its past links with slavery really extensively and thoroughly”, and would look at “what more we can do as a bank”, consisting of making monetary contributions to BAME groups.
Lloyds Banking Group: John White Cater was the president of London and Brazilian Bank and received payment for five claims for estates in Jamaica. Eight previous business related to the group have links to claimants or recipients in UCL’s database.
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson stated: “A lot has changed during the 300- year history of our brands and while we have much within our heritage to be happy with, we can’t be proud of everything. Like any organization that is so interwoven with our nation’s history, we must acknowledge and gain from our past.”
They included that the company would “provide much better outcomes for our coworkers and clients. This is our aim. We can do more, we can do much better and we will do it together.”
