POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA)– Three employees of a Polk County McDonald’s are serving the fast-food chain with a civil rights suit.
The Black workers say the business has actually done nothing in action to the racial discrimination they have actually dealt with by their dining establishment’s general manager.
Monica Scott is one of the three workers filing the lawsuit and claims the basic supervisor at the McDonald’s situated at 5525 Walt Loop in Lakeland has actually created an unwelcoming environment for Black employees and consumers.
” She treats Black staff members more harshly and stated despiteful features of black people that made me feel like crying,” Scott stated.
One of those remarks, according to Scott, related to a Black client in the drive-thru requesting catsup and grape jelly to accompany a breakfast order.
” The GM told me that it’s always Black individuals who desire complimentary stuff,” she said.
When she and other colleagues raised issues to the corporate human resources department, Scott stated she was confronted with retaliation in the kind of bad performance grades and less hours of work.
” We were told that absolutely nothing would occur since the store pays,” she said. “When my hours were cut, it didn’t simply impact the size of my wallet, it (put) my kids’ livelihood and health and wellbeing in jeopardy.”

” McDonald’s unquestionably supports the requirement for equality and fairness on both sides of the counter in our dining establishments, and we do not tolerate discrimination or retaliation of any kind by anyone. We stand with Black neighborhoods across the globe in our dedication to resolve unacceptable racial injustices and are dissatisfied that these accusations do not reflect the high requirements we hold ourselves liable to every day throughout all areas of our service. We take these claims seriously and will review the grievance once it has been submitted and do something about it appropriately.”

Additionally, McDonald’s stated it supplies “lots of channels for employees to report principles, discrimination or human rights issues” such as an anonymous call line that is run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Scott stated it is time for the lunch counter chain to take responsibility.
” We’re demanding that McDonald’s programs us that Black employees matter and I hope this complaint forces the business to do simply that,” she stated.
This specific location is simply one of numerous McDonald’s that has actually provided complimentary meals for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and Scott states she and the other two staff members have experienced the supervisor single out Black nurses and firefighters by making them show evidence of employment.
