Democrats and the Trump administration are “nowhere close to a deal” on extending the $600- a-week federal unemployment advantage, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows informed reporters on Wednesday.

The $600 benefit was passed by Congress in March as part of the Coronavirus Help, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) to assist those impacted by the financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Republicans have been pressing to slash the emergency advantage down to $200 a week, claiming the larger figure has discouraged recipients from returning to work throughout the height of a pandemic.

Nevertheless, a brand-new study by Yale University economic experts found “no proof that more generous advantages disincentivized work either at the start of the growth or as companies sought to return to company with time.”
