HONG KONG– The U.S. declared its official opposition to a swath of Chinese claims in the South China Sea, in an uncommonly direct difficulty to Beijing’s efforts to assert control in the strategic waters.
Revealing the policy shift on Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo characterized the choice as an effort to maintain international law against what he called a “may makes right” project by China to coerce and intimidate its Southeast Asian neighbors into delivering their interests.
