The Art Local is a drawing school run by 2 college art teachers, Renee Lai and Sarah Fagan, in Austin, Texas.

Lai and Fagan teach both art majors and non-majors at the University of Texas, Austin, and St. Edward’s University.

So the duo decided to create reduced variations of their classes with optional homework.

Here’s what it’s like to take a drawing class over Zoom.

I saw a flyer for the art class in my Austin neighborhood while strolling my dog. Interested, I went to the website noted and registered for “Intro to Drawing.”

The class took place on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. through the month of June. The supply list included basic art materials, like pencils, erasers, and a sketchbook.

Lai stated she misses out on face-to-face interactions with students while teaching over Zoom. In the classroom, Lai would usually back up her trainees to help remedy any mistakes.

” Often just my presence alone gets them to snap to attention and remember specific things that I’ve told them,” Lai told Organisation Expert.

While practicing new principles, the teachers assisted me with any issues I was having, like where to begin and how to fix typical mistakes.

Over Zoom, we held up our drawings to share our development and get feedback.

Weekly, Fagan and Lai offered us drawing assignments to finish by the next class conference.

We sent our assignments online by taking pictures of our illustrations and submitting them to a class folder. Lai and Fagan commented on our uploads to share useful feedback and names of artists our work reminded them of.

These tasks kept me considering drawing throughout the week.

The objective of our homework was to practice the abilities we found out in class that day.

The tasks challenged me to be client with myself. Drawing for an hour looked like a long period of time when the class started, now, I can quickly fill an afternoon with just my sketchbook since I am being more intentional in what I draw.

By the end of the class, I had made drawing a part of my personal life, which is precisely what I wanted to get out of it.

I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily better at drawing than I was prior to I took this class, however I’m certainly drawing a lot more because I have a much better sense of how to approach an illustration.

Although I would have preferred to take this class in-person, Lai and Fagan said there are some advantages to hosting the Art Resident classes over Zoom, like reaching a broader audience and having a more intimate environment.

” We’re all in each other’s houses at the same time, which is strange and special and that’s life right now,” Fagan added.

Regardless, this class made me particular I would not want to attend college online, despite the fact that I ‘d take it once again.

I wouldn’t desire to attend college online after taking this course.
