Company to lay off 940 employees at Las Vegas’ McCarran airport -Journal

In another sign of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and its toll on tourism, the food provider at McCarran International Airport says it will lay off 940 staff members.

HMSHost alerted the Nevada Department of Work, Training and Rehabilitation about the layoffs in a dated letter Tuesday as part of the Employee Change and Retraining Alert Act.

Many food and retail outlets at McCarran were closed down after air travel was struck hard as Nevada and other states ordered inessential services closed beginning in March. Ever since, as states have actually resumed, McCarran and other airports have actually seen slowly increasing guest volumes, though the numbers are still far listed below what was seen in previous years.

Although some outlets at McCarran have reopened with minimal hours, lots of remain closed.

” HMSHost continues to see an unmatched decrease in traffic in airports and on the motorways,” the company’s letter stated.

A number of the impacted positions are consisted of fast food clerks, baristas, bartenders and dining establishment hosts.

The employees who’ve been furloughed since March will be laid off effective Oct. 15, HMSHost stated.

Individually, Sky Chefs Inc., an airline catering business at McCarran, notified DETR on July 31 that it prepares to lay off 86 of its employees. Those layoffs will take place on Oct. 1, the company said in its letter.

Sky Chefs cautioned that since of the unforeseeable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and ever-changing travel limitations, the number of impacted staff members might alter before the Oct. 1 layoff date.
