( Reuters) – International Business Machines Corp ( IBM.N) announced on Monday a brand-new processor chip for information centers that it states will be able to deal with 3 times the work of its predecessor.
The IBM-designed Power10 chip will be produced by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930 KS) and is meant for usage by businesses inside data centers, IBM said.
The chip will utilize Samsung’s 7-nanometer chip manufacturing procedure, which resembles the 7-nanometer technology that Advanced Micro Gadgets Inc ( AMD.O) uses to have its chips made by Taiwan Semiconductor Production Co Ltd (2330 TW).
Both IBM and AMD use outside chip factories to contend versus Intel Corp, the dominant company of central processor chips in information centers and among the couple of gamers left that both styles and produces its own chips.
Intel recently said its next generation of producing innovation faces hold-ups, which analysts believe will allow its competitors to acquire market share.
IBM has long focused on high-performance computing systems, with three of the world’s top-ten fastest supercomputers utilizing its chips. The company stated Monday that the Power10 chip has actually been created to be faster at expert system computing jobs than its predecessor, doing such work up to 20 times faster than its previous generation of chip.
