North Korea’s Economy Grew in 2019, Despite International Sanctions

SEOUL– North Korea’s economy grew 0.4%in 2019, the first time Pyongyang showed positive development in 3 years, helped by construction activity and expanded agricultural output, South Korea’s central bank said.

But North Korea watchers cautioned versus reading this as a sign of a recovery for Pyongyang’s sanctions-hit economy. The period measured was before the international spread of the brand-new coronavirus, and the country’s mining industry, when an essential cash generator, diminished for the 3rd consecutive year.
