Tesla has begun trial production of the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive ahead of an impending launch, according to sources acquainted with the matter.
When Tesla released the Design Y in March 2019, the company noted four various variations of the electrical SUV: Requirement Variety, Long Variety, Double Motor AWD (with a Long Variety battery), and Performance (likewise with a Long Variety battery).
However, previously this month, CEO Elon Musk revealed that Tesla was canceling the Standard Range variation of the Design Y and rather, it will only include a Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive variation to the lineup.
Musk stated that the new variation of the electric SUV would be coming in the next few months.
Now Electrek has learned Tesla has started a trial production run of the Design Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive, according to sources knowledgeable about the matter.
Production trial is among the last steps towards bringing a brand-new variation of a vehicle to market.
Tesla put a few Design Y LR RWD vehicles through a trial run on its GA4 assembly line before temporarily shutting it down for upgrades.
The car manufacturer has yet to open orders for the new variation of the car.
Tesla didn’t confirm the rate yet, however Musk meant $45,000 when first revealing the brand-new variation and earlier this week, we reported that Tesla remarkably notes Design Y Long Range RWD for $48,000 on its loan calculator.
Nevertheless, the car manufacturer got rid of the listing after we reported on the upgrade.
Electrek’s Take
To be fair, Tesla producing the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive is not a big leap from producing the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor AWD.
They are essentially simply removing the front motor, which they are currently providing for the Design 3.
But you still need to produce the cars and truck and test it to make sure it depends on the standards and get the thumbs-up from the EPA.
I think the production is not too far.
I would not be surprised if Tesla opens orders for the Design Y LR RWD by the end of the month and start shipments next month.
