- Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, was born in Oakland, California.
- She is indisputably an US person.
- Trump and his advisors have refused to reject the lie about her citzenship, producing a clear parallel to Trump’s racist promotion of the so-called “birther” lie about previous President Barack Obama.

President Donald Trump invested years pressing the lie known as “birtherism” that there was doubt about whether former President Barack Obama was a United States citizen and for that reason eligible to be president.
In Between 2011 and 2016, Trump spread the conspiracy. Obama eventually launched his birth certificate, which, of course, revealed he was born in Hawaii.
On Thursday, Trump promoted a likewise racist lie that Sen. Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic vice governmental nominee, isn’t qualified to be vice president since her parents were immigrants.
Harris, who is Black and whose parents were Indian and Jamaican immigrants, was born in Oakland, California, and is indisputably an US person.
” I heard it today that she does not meet the requirements,” Trump informed reporters, referring to an exposed Newsweek op-ed by John Eastman, a conservative legal scholar opposed to due citizenship. “I have no concept if that’s right. I would have thought, I would have presumed, that the Democrats would have examined that out prior to she gets selected to run for vice president.”
Trump added that Eastman is a “extremely extremely certified, very talented attorney.”
Under the Fourteenth Amendment, anybody born in the United States is instantly a United States resident. And the Supreme Court verified the right to birthright citizenship for all, no matter race and nationality, in its 1898 choice in United States vs. Wong Kim Ark
The majority choice read, “the Fourteenth Modification verifies the ancient and basic rule of citizenship by birth within the territory, in the obligation and under the defense of the nation, including all kids here born of resident aliens … The Modification, in clear words and in manifest intent, includes the children born, within the territory of the United States, of all other individuals, of whatever race or color, domiciled within the United States.”
Eastman’s fraudulent op-ed went viral online on Thursday and a Trump project advisor, Jenna Ellis, shared it on Twitter. When asked about it, Ellis told reporters that Harris’ citizenship is “open question, and one I think Harris should address so the American people know for sure she is qualified.”
The president’s leading consultant and son-in-law Jared Kushner declined to turn down the lie when inquired about it on Friday.
” At the end of the day, it’s something that’s out there,” Kushner informed CBS News. “I personally have no factor to think she’s not [eligible].”
Harris’ moms and dads earned doctorates from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963 and had actually lived in the US for a number of years before their first child was born.
Instead of completely backing what is clearly a lie, the president and his team are fanning the flames of bigotry in an attempt to weaken someone who might end up being the country’s very first Black vice president.
The lie also aligns with Trump’s contempt for bequest citizenship, which he’s falsely stated he might unilaterally eliminate.
