BRUSSELS– Apple Inc.’s legal fight in Europe over a $152 billion tax costs will continue, potentially for several years, after the European Union appealed a court judgment that sided with the tech giant.
EU authorities doubled down Friday on their judgment from 2016, which declared that Ireland had actually given unlawful tax breaks to Apple. This followed the business’s unexpected win in July at the bloc’s second-highest court, where judges stated the European Commission– the EU’s competitors enforcement arm– didn’t bring enough proof that Ireland had approved prohibited tax breaks to Apple between 2003 and 2014.
The commission’s competitors chief, Margrethe Vestager, said the court had “made a variety of mistakes,” triggering the appeal. “Making sure that all companies, big and small, pay their reasonable share of tax stays a top priority for the commission,” she stated.
Apple stated it would examine the commission’s appeal, including that the “facts have actually not altered” given that the court’s July decision.
The total amount of 14.3 billion euros, equivalent to $167 billion, which includes interest, will stay parked in escrow till the European Court of Justice, the bloc’s greatest court, renders its judgment.
