Business Moves From Resistance to Action on Environment

When Congress last pushed for extensive climate legislation a years ago, much of corporate America was either neutral or hostile.

In an indication of how much corporate mindsets have changed, the Service Roundtable, one of the country’s most popular business groups, is tossing its support behind broad-based measures to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It didn’t say whether that should be through a carbon tax or a system of tradable emissions permits.

The material of the principles doesn’t break brand-new ground– many big companies long ago embraced similarly or more aggressive goals. The U.S. targeted lowering emissions 80%by 2050 when it joined the worldwide Paris climate accord in 2016.

Rather, the significance of the statement is that it demonstrates how business is shifting from a source of resistance to a force for action on environment. Business Roundtable declaration represents the consensus of more than 200 members spanning every sector of the economy, from retail, finance and innovation to health care, manufacturing and even oil and gas.

When the group last put out principles on climate, in 2007, it didn’t back compulsory steps such as carbon rates due to the fact that of internal difference and warned against policies with “inappropriate” financial expenses.
