Thanks to the pandemic, the front porch is taking pleasure in a new golden age. Like their near cousins, stoops, steps, even fire gets away, porches offer a semipublic setting where we can meet pals and neighbors in person– even if those faces are masked. In the words of Claude Stephens, founder of a tongue-in-cheek group called Expert Porch Sitters Union Resident 1339, a porch is “the only location where you can seem like you are outside and inside at the exact same time; out with all of the next-door neighbors and alone checking out a book.”
