Family-owned White Elephant announces it’s liquidating its inventory and closing for good

SPOKANE, Wash – After 74 years of selling sporting items and toys, the owners of the White Elephant are closing both their places at 1730 North Division and 12614 East Sprague. Liquidation sales start Tuesday, June 9th, 2020.

According to a news release, the owners said, “The time has come for us to step out from behind the counter and delight in the passions of household and recreation that this business was established upon. It has been a significant run. The White Elephant has served our family well and supplied us with a great and lovely life. We are permanently indebted to our faithful clients, present and previous staff members, our valued good friends, and the entire Spokane community who have supported us with remarkable commitment for the past 74 years.”

The White Elephant locations on North Department and East Sprague will be closed Monday, June 8th, to get ready for liquidation. The liquidation sale will begin Tuesday, June 9th, at 9am. Restricted tenancy and social distancing policies will be in result to protect the health and welfare of our customers and workers.

In 1946, after returning from his service in WWII, John R. Conley established The White Elephant offering war surplus. John started to construct the shop’s inventory based on his passions of fishing, outside entertainment and discovering the best deal.

After John’s marriage to Mary E. Condon in 1949 and the birth of the very first of their eleven children in 1950, the White Elephant started selling toys. Throughout the years, friends and family assisted run the store.

John Conley died in 2017 and the business is currently owned by sons Richard Conley and Patrick Conley, and partner Mary Conley Sr.

In a news release, the owners said, “The decision to close our shops was particularly hard considering the impact on our present workers and the next generation of our family. We have actually been checking out alternatives to reorganize for a long time. Nevertheless, with the increasingly complicated retail environment, closing is the very best alternative.
