- The former unique counsel Robert Mueller released a Washington Post op-ed on Saturday protecting the Russia examination simply one day after President Donald Trump commuted Roger Stone’s sentence.
- ” The females and males who carried out these examinations and prosecutions acted with the greatest stability. Claims to the contrary are false,” Mueller wrote.
Robert Mueller, the former special counsel leading Justice Department’s Russia investigation, spoke out in a Washington Post op-ed about President Donald Trump’s current commutation of the previous Republican politician strategist Roger Stone.
” I feel forced to react both to broad claims that our examination was invalid and our motives were improper, and to specific claims that Roger Stone was a victim of our office,” he composed in the op-ed, which was released Saturday.
Stone’s commutation immediately drew intense backlash from Trump’s challengers. He argued in the op-ed that Stone was appropriately convicted by a jury of 7 felony counts last year, consisting of making incorrect declarations to the FBI, witness tampering, and blockage of justice.
” We made every decision in Stone’s case, as in all our cases, based solely on the realities and the law and in accordance with the guideline of law,” he stated.
The op-ed marks one of the rare times Mueller has spoken publicly about his work as unique counsel. He was notoriously quiet throughout the roughly two-year investigation, and just spoke during a press conference in May 2019 and throughout statement before Congress in July 2019.
