Workers protest at Charlotte cafe stating they were discriminated against

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Whether individuals have been in Charlotte for a couple of months or many years, they have probably been to Amelie’s French Pastry shop and Cafe. Lots of people enjoy it for the pastries, the sandwiches and the drinks.

However Saturday, some workers took a stand versus the beloved cafe. They implicated Amelie’s of discriminating against them.

Outside of Amelie’s NoDa area, former employees shared stories of working for the company. They said the discrimination they faced was relentless through all of Amelie’s areas in Charlotte and Atlanta.

“I constantly saw people I trained here promoted while I was continuously provided a reason I could not be promoted,” former staff member Saminah Chapman stated.

“I wished to be here to verify what they are stating to share in the labor of holding Amelie’s responsible,” another worker stated.

Employees shared how the discrimination they came across impacted them financially and emotionally.

“It was sad to me that the place I once enjoyed a lot had actually treated me so badly and created an environment that was so harmful to everybody that wasn’t white,” Chapman stated.

On top of the discrimination claims, they likewise stated Amelie’s made incorrect claims about economically support system that combat bigotry.

Protesters demanded that Amelie’s modification its practices, pay staff members more and donate 10%of their profits to the community groups they claimed to support.

“I still have hope that Amelie’s can be better, and I hope they hear our stories and materialize changes inside their environment,” Chapman said.

Channel 9 got an action from Amelie’s CEO, Frank Reed. He stated much of the claims versus the coffee shop occurred six years ago under different owners and management.

“We have a great deal of work to do. We have actually let a lot of things go untreated and unaddressed, and we will no longer be complicit and complacent,” Reed stated.
